　――今、日本のアニメやマンガは「クール・ジャパン」として海外で評判です。村上さんは、その旗手とも見られているようですね。

　「『クール・ジャパン』なんて外国では誰も言っていません。うそ、流言です。日本人が自尊心を満たすために勝手にでっち上げているだけで、広告会社の公的資金の受け皿としてのキャッチコピーに過ぎない。外国人には背景や文脈のわかりづらい日本のマンガやアニメが少しずつ海外で理解され始めてはいますが、ごく一部のマニアにとどまり、到底ビジネスのレベルに達しておらず、特筆すべきことは何もない。僕は村上隆という一人の芸術家として海外で注目されているのであって、クール・ジャパンとは何の関係もない」
